Sun Tzu, the legendary Chinese military strategist and general has said, "Know the enemy and know yourself; in a hundred battles you will never be in peril." This is a teaching I take to my heart, as we face the impending storm that the recent exposure of our abilities to the world is sure to bring. One thing is clear: the roots of our current situation are seeded in the events of the past.

Consider this your invitation to join my quest to uncover the history of the Company: how it came to be, what really happened, and what impact it continues to have over our lives. The truth will set us free...

Old School Fun & Games

I've known my father for most of my life, and I never knew him to be a fun-and-games kind of man. You know, he was more of a stoic, imposing, implacable, unimpeachable kind of guy. But fun?

So yesterday, Kenjiro's pet cricket Aiko went on walkabout. Being very attached to Aiko, who's suffering from restless legs syndrome, Kenjiro went to great lengths to find her, and was crawling around the ducts for most of the day. Finally, he found Aiko, sleeping on top of what looks like an old school game cartridge, unmarked. I didn't think it was anything. But Ando, as usual, thought otherwise. Game boy that he is, he cranked up the emulator -- and what do you know? There was a game in there! We've got it rigged up so you can try it.

Space Race Game

Ando thinks this game must have been put together in the late '80s, based on the code. Obviously, my father was alive at that time and so not a game player. Ando suggested that he may have used the game to stash some sensitive information. So me, Kenjiro and Ando have been hammering on the Cowboy, but so far nothing. Can you give it a try? Let me know what you come up with.

Oh, and before I forget, were you able to make anything out of all those numbers I wrote about in my last blog? We're still stumped over here.

Numbers Numbers Everywhere

Much as I prefer to keep my brain tidy and my thinking concise, I have found myself obsessing over the malevolent mentalist, Maury Parkman. To that end, I took a second look at his AT profile, and I noticed a numerical sequence I hadn't noticed before. Luckily, Ando and Kenjiro are still hard at work on the Danger Room database between their marathon games of Call of Duty. After several hours, we found a document that includes both numbers, which appears to be one page of many from Agent Eric Thompson, Sr.'s personnel file. Here it is:

Thompson_PF364.jpg

Yeah, that's a lot of numbers, alright. We're going to start the process of checking them out right after lunch. In the meantime, if you come up with any leads in terms of what this all could mean, please ping. I know it all may seem a little tangential, but I'm sure we're getting closer to something big.

Memories of Maury

Thanks for your help in unlocking Maury's AT profile. I was curious as to how and why he first came to The Company, so I poked around 1978. Figured Angela and the gang must have had some kind of post-mortem on the Mindy incident. Lo and behold, there was Maury! Looks like Linderman brought him into the fold.

Back on February 7th, 1978, Company brass opened a conversation on tracking specials, in the aftermath of Mindy and Ted's disappearance. Ando input the info we got out of Maury's AT profile into the Danger Room database, and came up with a few odds and ends, see below.

If you ask me, this is the moment that changed the whole game, whether The Company knew it or not. It certainly doesn't seem like they considered the long-term, real-world implications of tracking us. Doublethink, anyone? Anyway, it's a provocative new thread, which may yield important answers about the past.

More Strange Video

So Ando convinced me to delay my second trip back to TMI, advising me to comb the Danger Room for any material on Adam Monroe. So far, the only thing I came up with was this video:

The videotape has a handwritten note: AM: Send M/P007. Could this be a reference to Maury Parkman, father of Matt? I know that Maury Parkman was one of the Company founders, per the one photo I have of the Original 12.
Check it out:

Heroes_12.jpg

Even though I know that Maury Parkman is no longer on this earth, I have to admit, I'm still a little scared of the guy. He has the kind of ability that knows no bounds, and from what Matt has told me, his father was truly a cruel and unpredictable man. Anyway, back to work. There must be some kind of AT profile on this guy...

Mindy Goes TMI

I've always thought you could measure the mettle of a hero by the company he keeps, and you guys have once again proved me correct. Thanks for all your good work in putting some sense to recent confusion.

I've taken some liberties, poking around TMI's executive offices back in 1978. Ran across a code scrawled on a chalkboard. And Mindy was carrying a file on Adam Monroe. Zoinks! What could my diabolical arch enemy have to do with all this? Especially since my father locked him up in 1977?!

Also, ran across a code scrawled on a chalkboard. Seems likely it's the password we've been looking for, to unlock Mindy Sprague's AT profile.

After spending several hours, Ando finally got a hit off our growing Danger Room database. One of the few videotapes we were able to save from the deluge, this was labeled "020678." I'll go back to TMI on that date just as soon as I can.

In the meantime, check out the video and let me know what you think.

The Loft

Greetings and salutations -

I've just returned from that fateful and tragic evening in Greenwich Village, 1963, and I'm still reeling. Perhaps it is indeed as the immortal Billy Joel once said: only the good die young.

Who knew my father was on the run, trying to escape his destiny? Is it possible that he had some ability he kept hidden from us all these years? This all feels like the tip of a very large iceberg.

I decided to drop by the loft to see if I could find anything.
I had just run across what must be Angela Petrelli's dream journal, when forces beyond my control prompted me to skedaddle. But I did get a chance to snap a picture of this:

AP_journal.jpg

Not sure what it all means, but I figure it was the universe's way of shifting my exploration further ahead in time. So I checked out my father's files to see if I could find anything relating to the date in Angela's journal. And here's what I got:

PUZZLE

Zoinks! Any idea what this means?

Day of Despair in 1963

Friends -

I'm so sad to show you my latest finding...

riot_article.jpg

It seems like a great light was eclipsed on the day that Chris Coolidge was killed. Somehow, I feel sure that my father was a witness to this devastating event. He would have been a young man then, full of idealism. I wonder what he was like... Anyway, thanks to your support, I've decided to go witness what happened on July 12, 1963 with my own eyes.

Oh, one more thing. I found this in the same file as the newspaper clipping:

loft_ad.jpg

Figure I'll check this out too, as long as I'm there. Why does that address look familiar to me? Does anyone recognize it? I'll be checking in while I'm gone, and will report back when I return to Tokyo.

Blast from the Past

45record

As it turns out, Kenjiro likes to listen to his Django Reinhardt records during his lunch break, so he had a turntable in his office. Is this Chris Coolidge somebody? Is there a message in his music? The great time-space philosopher Albert Einstein once said that music is the driving force behind intuition. Perhaps there's something here for me to intuit.

I'm going to listen to the song a few more times while Kenjiro and I muck out the Danger Room. We've brought in some Air Blasters, and set up an area for triage. It's going to be a big undertaking, salvaging the contents of my father's past. Afraid we lost most of the tapes to water damage...

Regardless of what Ando says, I'm still tempted to attend Coolidge-san's concert at Uncle Ira's Counter & Culture. Trying to think carefully, decide by the Heroes code. Not sure if I'm quite ready to go back to the past after everything with Charlie. No matter what I decide, I promised Ando that I would NOT step on any butterflies. And that my friends, is a lot harder than it looks.

A Sign!

This morning, the universe gave me a sign that I'm on the right track, and a prod in a particular direction. It all makes me wonder, is Destiny steering my course, or something else...?

So I'm sitting in my office at Yamagato, reading up on my favorite sci-fi movie from 1963, when a drop of water splashes on my keyboard. The air conditioner vent is leaking again, so I go down to the basement to talk to maintenance, but no one's in the office. So I start poking around - this place is huge! Curiously, there's a little puddle on the floor, so I follow it looking for the source. Lo and behold, I find a battered, dirty door hidden away behind a bank of filing cabinets with this symbol on it:

door

My pass key won't open the door, so I run to find Kenjiro, who holds all the master keys. According to him, no one's been in this room for twenty years; he forgot it even existed. Apparently, my father used it for deep storage, and besides Kenjiro, only Kaito and his assistant had the key. Kenjiro opens the door, and we go inside. The place is a mess, dripping ceiling, puddles on the floor, torn apart files everywhere, videotape, stacks of old computers. There're muddy footprints on the floor that look fresh, so I'm guessing someone's been in here recently - looking for something. If this was my father's store room - his Danger Room - then it would have been spotlessly clean and organized.

Kenjiro spots a broken pipe, which explains all the water damage, and leaves to get some tools, so I have a look around. There's an exploded box of files near my feet, so I pick up the first one I see. Here's the only thing it contains:

stub

What do you think? Should I go back in time to check this out? I'm a little wary of time travel these days... Too many butterflies. But I have a nagging feeling that this is one show I really shouldn't miss...

Anyway, I have my hands full for now. Going to take the next few days and start sorting through these files. Did I tell you Destiny spoke to me? Here, in Kaito's Danger Room, I will start my quest!

I'll share anything that looks interesting. Let me know if you come up with anything on your end.

Back on Track

Last time I blogged, I was all fired up to get going, investigating the past of my father and the other founders of the Company. To fully understand our legacy, in an attempt to level the playing field in this daunting new era of exposure. How else can we face the future?

I've combed through my father's office looking for anything that might give me a place to start my quest - a sign, a clue, anything. I went back through the safe, all through the last few years of his files, took up the carpet. I even brought in a team of guys with spectrometers and sniffing dogs. Nothing, nada, zilch, zip, zero.

I sat quietly, and started to think it through... and I thought myself right into a dark, existential funk. After all, what is the legacy of our fathers, really? A world plagued by war and on the brink of economic chaos, where millions of children go to bed hungry every night? Where so many still refuse their fellow man the dignity and respect inherent in the phrase "we are all created equal"? How do specials like us stand a chance out in the open?

It was only after a serious, soul-searching talk with Ando that I realized the true root of my distress. It's grief over the loss of my Charlie. Yes, I know what you'll say... That Charlie led a beautiful and productive life. That we mustn't step on the butterflies. A true hero knows when it's time to let go... And I have. But there's a part of me that will always mourn what might have been. There's a part of me that wonders if I'll ever love again. Sometimes, especially late at night, the pain of losing Charlie is almost unbearable.

For now, I've decided to take it easy on myself. Let this grief flow through me, honoring it without holding on to it. Use the pain to fuel my quest. I'm just beginning to understand the gift that Charlie has given me. When her world changed forever in an instant, she simply got on with life. Did the best she could with what she had. As always, Charlie inspires me to a better person.

So, it's time to get on with it. I am certain that the door to the rabbit hole of the past lays somewhere within the walls of this building. I am going to search every square inch of it until I find something. Until then -
